B&B in Venice near the Peggy Guggenheim Collection
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most famous museums in Venice, for sure one of themost popular all over the world. Entirely devoted to contemporary art of 1900, the museum proposes the personal collection of works of arts of the New Yorker Peggy Guggenheim, former wife of the artist Max Ernst and nephew of the tycoon Solomon R. Guggenheim. Peggy Guggenheim owned Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice, it was her private residence and became also the actual museum.
The permanent collection mainly consists of artworks belonging to Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract art, and artists such as Picasso, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Brâncusi, William Congdon, Conrad Marca-Relli, Pollock. Italian artists like Lucio Fontana, Afro Basaldella, Agostino Bonalumi, Toti Scialoja, Giuseppe Santomaso, Tancredi Parmeggiani, Emilio Vedova e Carla Accardi are well represented too.
In October 2012 the collection received an important donation from the American collectors Hannelore and Rudolph Schulhof: among these works, artists such as Alberto Burri, Alexander Calder, Lucio Fontana, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, now enrich the Guggenheim permanent collection.
The museum always proposes temporary exhibitions of contemporary art too, and it’s also worth a visit because of its famous garden and terrace on the Grand Canal, where it’s not rare to take part to special evenings and cocktails.
